On this 13-day tour you will experience local culture and visit some of the most beautiful natural places. You will visit the colonial town Villa de Leyva and hike to the Paramo to visit the sacred lagoon of Iguaque, important to the Muisca mythology. Your trip will bring you to Barichara and another adventure: the hike through the Chicamocha Canyon. The last part of your adventure tour will bring you to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta for the incredible and strenuous Lost City Trek. You will be going deep into the jungle and learn about indigenous culture on the way.

You will be welcomed at the airport in Bogota by your driver and english-speaking guide. They will drive you to Villa de Leyva and provide great information and insight of the area.

Today, you will learn more about the numerous archaeological and paleontological treasures around VIlla de Leyva. You will explore the desert landscapes around the town on horseback and will visit an astronomical site in the middle of the desert called “Infiernito” as well as a museum showcasing various fossils. Later you will visit the El Marqués de Villa de Leyva wineyard, one of the most traditional ones in Colombia and the producer of a multi-award winning sauvignon blanc and the first merlot producer in Colombia.
You will have the afternoon free to explore the town on your own and to try one of the many great restaurants.

Get ready for your first long hike of your adventure tour. You will hike from the high Andean jungle to the páramo, the area above the continuous tree line and an ecosystem unique to the region. Here you will find the sacred lagoon of Iguaque, the source of water and Muisca mythology, the Legend of Bachué. This is also an ideal spot for birdwatching, and for observing other flora and fauna.
You will arrive at the hotel in the late afternoon for a well deserved rest.

After breakfast your driver will pick you up for your private transfer to Barichara, a smaller colonial village on top of a plateau overlooking the Suarez River. On arrival you will have time for lunch and a short rest before you explore the village with your guide.
Barichara is said to be one of Colombia’s prettiest towns, renowned as a fine example of colonial architecture and an oasis of tranquility. Your guide will take you along the tranquil cobblestone streets admiring the adobe houses and visiting artisan workshops and handcraft stores. The most distinctive features include the cobblestone streets, the rammed-earth houses, the bahereque building style, mud tiles and stone monuments made by well-known Barichara’s artists.

Early in the morning, your driver will bring you to the starting point of the next big hike near Villanueva. This route follows the mountains from Villanueva to Jordán, a spectacular and unique landscape with a wide variety of fauna and flora. The trail is framed by the immensity of the Chicamocha Canyon contrasting with the small size of Jordán, a 80-inhabitant village located in the depth of the canyon that seems frozen in time. Upon arrival in Jordán, you will enjoy of a well-deserved and fresh cooked lunch after which you can enjoy the natural wells and river close by.

Today you will continue your hike at the McCormick Bridge, which spans the Chicamocha River. This hanging bridge, built in the 19th century, was the first of its kind in Colombia, and marks the entrance to a Spanish-style colonial town. The wailing trail will take you along the colonial cobblestone road through the marvellous landscape of Jordán, the Chicamocha canyon and all the way up to the Los Santos plateau.
Once you arrive at the village Los Santos you will continue by private transfer to the coffee farm where you will be staying for the night.
Upon arrival and after a rest, you will be able to learn more about the coffee production and enjoy a coffee tasting.

Your driver will pick you up after breakfast for your transfer to Bucaramanga airport from where you will be taking your flight to Santa Marta. Upon arrival at Santa Marta airport you will be taken to the hotel in town.
You will have time to explore the city by yourself and enjoy a meal at one of the fantastic restaurants in town.

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel for your private transfer of around 1.5 hours to Machete Pelao, where your 4 day small group Lost City adventure will begin. After lunch in Machete Pelao, you will start your hike. The first part of the route will be rather steep and will take 4 hours to complete. In the evening, you will enjoy a well-deserved local meal at a local settlers farm.

After breakfast at 7am, you will start your 7-hour trek to another native cabin passing by abundant vegetation and memorable views. After lunch you continue your journey, reaching the valley of the Buritaca River, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim.
On your way you will pass by indigenous dwellings such as those of the small settlement of Mutant where the Kogui people live. You will meet up with Mamo Romualdo, the main religious authority for the local people, about an one hour away from the Lost City.

Another early breakfast is followed by a walk for approx. 1 hour to the archaeological area. Here, you will climb the 1200 stone steps to reach Teyuna, the Lost City of the Taironas, a sacred site for indigenous communities living in the mountains. You will explore the remains of this ancient city, look at the archaeological excavations and experience its architecture.
There will be spare time to enjoy the landscape and take in the incredible views before heading back to the native camp. We will have lunch before trekking of approx. 6 hours back to the lower native cabin for the night.

After breakfast, you will trek for around 5 hours back to Machete Pelao for lunch. You will be picked up by your private driver who will bring you to your hotel for a well deserved afternoon at the beach and a good rest.

You can spend your last full day of your active holiday in Colombia by the beach, to let your body and mind recover from the strenuous hikes through some of Colombia’s most beautiful regions.
