If you like adventure sports, stunning landscapes and beautiful towns, then Santander in Colombia is exactly the right place for you. Not only can you paraglide through one of the biggest canyons, the Chicamocha canyon, but you can also go white water rafting in the Suarez River or the Fonce River or caving in one of the many caves in the area. You can visit several beautiful waterfalls, hike along the royal paths “camino real”, or visit coffee farms and colonial villages.
Santander is also known for the hormigas culonas or big bottomed ants. These ants are a delicacy and believed to have aphrodisiac qualities and are found in the area around San Gil and Barichara. They harvest them around April and May and that is also the best time to try them.
Bucaramanga is the capital of Santander and known for its nearly 200 parks and nice weather. You will hardly notice that there are three others towns, Floridablanca, Giron and Piedecuesta surrounding Bucaramanga as the infrastructure makes it seem like you are in one city.
You will not hear anyone talk about Santander without mentioning Barichara. Barichara is set on the edge of the canyon overlooking the Suarez River and it a great example for colonial architecture. It is a quiet village with many hidden activities and events. A highlight is the walk to the smaller village Guane.

After your driver and English-speaking guide will pick you up from the airport you will be making you way through the Chicamocha canyon to Barichara. You will stop at the Chicamocha Park, which houses a museum of the pre-Columbian indigenous Guane who inhabited the canyon. In the Park you will be able to enjoy a 360° view of the canyon, a remarkable landform, 227 km long and 2 km deep, making it deeper than the Grand Canyon in the United States.

After breakfast, you will walk a cobblestone path, one of the most important routes during the colonial period, as its use was mandatory for trade. The path also forms part of the route designed and later built by Geo von Lengerke, a German engineer and adventurer of the 19th century. This route is part of a network of cobblestone paths, called Royal Paths, which link Bogota with the Caribbean coast. Despite the passage of time, the spirit of the trail remains intact. At the end of this hike you will find Guane, a little village with a rich archaeological history. Here you can visit a small museum which houses an important collection of aquatic fossils and a mummy of the Guanes, a curious indigenous group that inhabited the Santander Region before the colonization of the Americas.
In the afternoon, you will explore Barichara. Barichara is said to be one of Colombia’s prettiest towns, renowned as a fine example of colonial architecture and an oasis of tranquility. You can walk along the tranquil cobblestone streets admiring the adobe houses and visiting artisan workshops and handcraft stores. The most distinctive features include the cobblestone streets, the rammed-earth houses, the bahereque building style, mud tiles and stone monuments made by well-known Barichara’s artists.

Early in the morning, you will be picked up for your private transfer to the starting point near Villanueva from where you will start the trek. This route follows the mountains from Villanueva to Jordan, a spectacular and unique landscape with a wide variety of fauna and flora. This trail is framed by the immensity of the Chicamocha Canyon contrasting with the small size of Jordán, a 80-inhabitant village located in the depth of the canyon that seems frozen in time. Upon arrival in Jordán, you will enjoy of a fresh cooked lunch and the natural wells and river where you can take a bath.

Today, you will walk a colonial cobblestone road through the marvellous landscape of Jordán, the Chicamocha canyon and Los Santos plateau. The trail starts at the McCormick Bridge, which spans the Chicamocha River. This hanging bridge, built in the 19th century, was the first of its kind in Colombia, and marks the entrance to a Spanish-style colonial town. After a while the town Jordán Sube looks like a scale-model from the distance, hidden in the depths of the canyon.
Once you arrive in Los Santos, you will be picked up for your transfer to the airport in Bucaramanga.

Your driver and guide will pick you up in Bogota and take you on a 7 hour drive to Barichara. Along the way you will pass by different regions and landscapes and will learn more about Colombia, its history and culture.

After breakfast, you will embark on a unique experience and follow your guide down a cave. You will get wet and visit underground chambers.
In the afternoon, you will learn the traditional mud painting technique from a local artist in a workshop where you will use the different colours obtained from the soil in the area such as yellow, red, brown and others.

Today you will need to bring along your sense of adventure for river rafting through the exhilarating rapids of the Suarez River. You have not really experienced Santander without doing a little whitewater rafting. The Suarez River, just an hour from San Gil, is one of the top high-volume run in the country. You get thrilling rapids and huge waves. Rafters have been known to experience huge waves, depending on the weather and the water levels. In the case of wipeouts, there are pools at the end of each rapid which make this river a safe run.
You will have the afternoon free to explore Barichara or the surrounding area.
